| Beginning… Lugansk Regional Universal Scientific Library named after M. Gorky was founded in 1897 as a free of charge public library with a reading hall.
At the beginning the library had only 2,502 books that were not supplied systematically, mostly owing to donations. Without having it's own building, the library constantly changed its address and only in 1945 moved to a new building in Lenin street, 34 and stayed there till 1965.. |

| Development… In 1919, when Lugansk district was founded as a part of Donetsk district, the main library of the city was opened based on the public library. Its staff was increased. The library was a methodology center for all 25 libraries of the district.
In 1923, when Lugansk region was founded, the library became central in the region with the staff of 8 people.. |
Becoming… In 1936 the library was named after M. Gorky.
In 1938, based on the main library of the city, the regional library was founded, according to this its functions and fields were expanded. At that time the number of books was 125000.
At the end of 1965 a building for the library was built in Sovetskayast., where the library is situated till now. |

Activity…
| Today in the library there are 17 departments, and 4 resource information centers. The library is the largest depository collection of editions of local lore study. With the purpose of systematization and acquiring of archives of local writers and others well-known people, the scientific and research work is conducted within the sector of literary historical archive created at the department of the local lore literature.
From the end of the 90s of the last century the library has started to work with the qualitatively new degree of service for the city dwellers: since 1997 it gives the readers an easy access to the Internet, since 2003 it introduced the automatized scheme of library service, since 2008 the library gives readers the opportunity to choose books from the main part of the book collection. |

The library has close ties with the public and state organizations and establishments, is actively cooperates with donor organizations.
It participates in various competitions and programs:
In 2001 the library became the finalist of competition «Original design 2001» and there it was awarded in the nomination «Qualitative content» for the project «Information portrait of the region». Now the project continues to develop and is being modernized actively(http://www.irp.lg.ua/eng/ )
In 2009 Lugansk the Regional Universal Scientific Library was awarded the diploma and the silver distinction «Approval of the year – 2009» as the participant of the national program «Business image of Ukraine. National achievements».

| It is awarded with:: - The Certificate of Honour of Lugansk Regional State Administration and Lugansk Regional Council for fruitful work, high professionalism, creative search, and great contribution to progress of library business in Lugansk region; - The 3-d Diploma of the Book Forum of Lugansk region «Book. Information. Society»; - The certificate of honour of board of the regional organization of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine; - Gratitude to the working staff of the library to the All-Ukrainian Day of Libraries and for active participation in social protection program for the population; - The diploma for Popularisation of fencing. |
The general book collection of the library in January 1, 2012 makes 1009710 copies of editions. During 2011 490,000 users visited the library, 786,000 copies of books are given out.
The history of our library does not come to an end, and it is necessary to march a long way together with our readers.
